The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in the land registers in the year 1715.
Luiz Vasconcelos Porto: He was the author of a vast program of innovations. Notably hetransformed many of the narrow older terraces into the broader terraces that are such a distinctive feature of Noval with their whitewashed staircases. These terraces permit a more efficient use of the land and a better exposition to the sun, and were considered revolutionary at the time.
António José da Silva: A Port shipper from Gaia, father-in-law of Luiz Valsconcelos Porto, he acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894 after its devastation by phylloxera. He restored the property by replanting its vineyards.
Quinta do Noval made its name with the declaration of the 1931 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, and the 1931 Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port, probably the most sensational Vintage Ports of the 20th century. Because of the global depression and the enormous production and shipment of the 1927 Vintage, most shippers did not declare the 1931. This success established Quinta do Noval among the great names of Vintage Port in the English and American markets, a leading position in terms of reputation which is maintained today.
THE SUPREME EXPRESSION OF THE TERROIR OF QUINTA DO NOVAL
Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is characterized by its purity of fruit and a fine and delicate quality that is typical of the wines of the property in general but which finds its most remarkable and enduring expression in the Vintage Ports. Equilibrium, harmony, finesse and elegance characterize our great Vintage Ports, which are declared only in great years (3 or 4 years in a decade) and only when the wines come up to Noval’s exacting standards.
Even then, the wines selected for the Quinta do Noval Vintage Port blend represent only a small proportion of our total production.
The 2011 Quinta do Noval Vintage has a very intense, very refined bouquet with quite broody black fruit, briary, smoke and mineral. This is very fresh, similar to the barrel sample last April. The palate is silky smooth on the entry with well-judged acidity. This is utterly harmonious and refined, effortless even, with a pure blackberry and lightly spiced finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is an outstanding Noval that is only surpassed by the 2000, a Noval that does not deserve to be over-shadowed by its Nacional sibling.
